Google's much-heralded Ice Cream Sandwich, or Android 4.0, will soon begin trickling down to more smartphones. Users always pine for the next version of a mobile operating system, but in the case of ICS, the pining is particularly justified. It's the first version of Android promising to unify the experience across tablets and smartphones, and the new-features list is long. Highlights include a redesigned user interface with what Google says are more intuitive gestures; a home screen with folders that users can drag groups of apps into and a "tray" that can hold apps, folders and other items that users want extra-fast access to; a "powerful new voice-input engine," per Google, that will transcribe ongoing dictation; and Android Beam, for sharing apps and photos and whatnot between near-field communication-enabled phones. There are also changes to text input and spell-check and the possibility of responding to an incoming call by text messaging (while the call is still ringing), as well as resizable widgets, a better email experience and the ability to use your face as a PIN to unlock the phone.
